Andrew Carney: Guestbook

Flood Hefley

November 12, 2011

Everyone knew Andrew Carney and his trumpet at Carson High School. Though you may have not known all of us watching and listening to you, I remember pausing to take in your commanding trumpet solos and noticing the dedication you displayed in your facial expressions as you pumped out such tunes as Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" when you were a kid. Your dedication and workmanship has, obviously, turned into a brilliant mastery of your very own that I'm sure Chuck (and Herb) must be enjoying today. That's full-circle ladies and gentlemen.

I just stumbled across your name through searching other people gigging around time. I just recently moved to Long Beach and play trumpet as well. I just finished school am seeing what kind of opportunities are out this way. I enjoyed checking out your videos. Take care!

Saw you play last night at the Redondo Beach pier. Really enjoyed the concert/gig. Nice variety of numbers showcasing that you're clearly well-versed at a wide variety of musical styles/idioms. Can't think of too many trumpeters who take on such varying styles with as much success. (I'd put Till Bronner on this short list...) I typically gravitate to mostly straight-ahead jazz but am open to other approaches and styles and appreciate how difficult it is to navigate successfully between them - which you clearly can do. Again, I enjoyed you're playing, despite the cold....

Listened to your videos and found them inspiring. In particular (for me) the structure of the 'Coming Home ... solo) is compellingly pleasing. With so many players the valve work = ran out of ideas. You have been able to render it in a musical way that seems to be your own style (different from Morgan / Hubbard - who both used that technique so effectively. I practice about 2 hrs a day (not a pro) and play around some clubs in HK - just sitting in. I'm going to shamelessly borrow some of the valve licks! As a caveat I too would be interested to know what Mthpc you usually use. I love your sound and note that you re not one of those screaming high note players (a sound I don't aspire to but it has its place and I respect their ability) I play a bach 1B which gives a great tone (especially thru the harmon) ... but of course it does not facilitate high range playing. The next question is re your bio. Just how did you manage to practice 6 hrs a day? And how did you break that up? Okay ... I've probably overstayed my welcome! All the best and keep posting your videos Andrew

Slam-thru! You ROCK! The site slams! The jams always kick the $#&> all over the place and remain timeless as ever! Can anybody tell how kewl this man is? One more praise to sing with the resumé: Andrew played with and for the great Tommy Walker of CA in Eagle Rock WAY BEFORE Mourning Into Dancing became the mega-worship song it is now. Andrew's not a Johnny-Come-Lately. He's cutting edge! Remain beautiful and Rock steady! It was awesome to hear your voice and your horn again tonight. Ana and I will save some seats for you two at the party. Peace, love and all the above: Backatchya! ;)

November 28, 2006

Hi Andrew,

I was doing a search for Bob Valle and came across your website - I was probably Bob's only woodwind student, taking improvising lessons as he was the only one I met, back then, who said it could be taught. It took a moment for me to connect your name, as I haven't seen you since 1979. However, just recently, I got ahold of an Super 8 projector and was finally able to look over some old sound movies from the Cabbies. And so, I saw the 1979 field show where you had a solo and remembered you. I was one of the "Torrance people" who joined that year.

Anyway, a great website and it was great hearing you play on your mp3 files here. You're really a great trumpet artist. I appreciate that more because I decided to try my hand at brass playing just last year - a new respect for brass players.

Anyways, take care.
